03.08 - Scoping Topics: Do you really need a migration workstation?
Here are some bullet points to discuss:
- Where can I get a migration workstation?
- The firm can buy one from BestBuy or their preferred vendor.
- Often times the firm's IT company can provide a loaner device.
- Can the server be used instead?
- No. Migrations are intensive operations and would likely crash an old server.
- Can an old/space PC/laptop be used?
- No. Migrations are intensive operations and an old PC wouldn't be able to handle it.
- Can the PC be shared with another staff member?
- No. It should be fully dedicated to you for the duration of the migration. The PC needs special software and a special setup and a staff member would not be able to use the PC during any part of the migration.
- Can we use a VM?
- No. VMs share resources with other VMs. If you used a VM, all the other VMs would grind to a halt and the migration would no go nearly as fast as it should.
- What do I do with the migration workstation after the migration?
- Erase it and return it to BestBuy for a refund OR give it to your favorite attorney/paralegal as a PC upgrade.
NOTE: Most firms have no problem purchasing a new PC when someone has the prospect of getting a nice PC upgrade after the migration is complete.
