04 - How We Expect Consultants to Talk
As you work with firms, it is important to use a vocabulary that portrays confidence, clarity, and simplicity.
This article will help you understand the words you should use and why they are superior to other terms you might have used in the past.
Scary Words
Many firms have been though a terrible migration experience in the past. As such, you want to portray a completely different kind of experience: one that is easy and pain-free. There are some terms you should avoid so the firm understands the experience better.
Avoid "Migrate"
Firms generally think that migrations are scary and complex. Instead, use the words backup from and restore into. This helps clearly indicate the step in the process as well as the direction of the data. It also makes the process seem less scary than a migration.
Avoid "Move"
After data has been moved, it is no longer in its original location - this makes firms hesitate because they can worry about their data being altered or deleted.
Instead, use the word copy because after you've restored the firm into their new system, the original system will still be left intact.
Ambiguous Terms
Some terms mean different things to different firms. When you encounter one of these terms, tell the firm that you're going to use an unambiguous term so that everyone can be on the same page.
Avoid "File"
Depending on the firm you talk to, a file could be a matter, a folder, or a document or it could be another way of saying save (ie. "I will file this document to a matter").
