How to Resize Hard Drive

This guide will walk you through the process of resizing a hard drive for your virtual machine.

Adding Extra Space to the Virtual Hard Disk (VM Host Side)

  1. Open Hyper-V Manager
    1. Select the VM you want to add the virtual disk to.
    2. Select and right click Checkpoint (make sure you click on the checkpoint NOT on Now)
    3. Click Delete Checkpoint...

  2. Allow the status to finish merging

  3. Right-click the VM you want to resize
    select Settings
  4. Under SCSI Controller, select Hard Drive
    click Edit
  5. The Edit Virtual Hard Disk Wizard will open
    Click Next
  6. Expand will be selected
    Click Next
  7. Type in the New size
    (In the example below the current size is 500 GB and the New Size will be 600 GB)
    Click Next
  8. Click Finish


Resize a Hard Drive

Once the virtual hard disk has been expanded, follow these steps from within the VM to resize the partition:
  1. Connect to the VM and Search for Computer Management
    Click Open
  2. Go to Disk Management
    You will be able to see the Unallocated space (in the example below it's 100 GB)
  3. Right-click the partition you want to extend
    In the example below we will extend C:
    Click Extend Volume
  4. The Extend Volume Wizard will open
    Click Next
  5. Click Next
  6. Click Finish
  7. After click finish the wizard will close, you can verify in Disk Management the new size of your disk.
