New Features

Matter Categories / Groups

A number of different practice management systems support the concept of Matter Categories and Matter-to-Matter relationships.  Depending on the system you are migrating firms from, the firm may refer to Matter Categories as "Related Matters", "Companion Cases" or "Case Groups".

Conceptually, a Matter Category is a grouping of related matters that are generally, all connected in a legal way.  For example, imagine that your firm represents 117 different victims in product liability cases against "Ladder Co." - a company that sells defective ladders. The Matter Category may be "Defective Ladders RE Ladder Co".

Two new tables have been introduced that capture this data:
__M_Matters_Categories
This table represents the name of the grouping of matters.

__M_Matters_Categories_Participating_Entities
This captures the different matters in the group

In some systems, Matter-to-Matter relationships are directional meaning that if Matter A is related to Matter B, then Matter B is not necessarily also related to Matter A.  In these systems, the 'Source' matter will have Final_Kind = 'Parent' and all matters it links to will have Final_Kind = 'Child'.
In other systems, Matter-to-Matter relationships are bi-directional meaning that is Matter A is related to Matter B, then Matter B is also related to Matter A.  In these systems, all the matters in the group will have Final_Kind = 'Child'.
