DropBox Backups: Read Me First

Before exporting documents from DropBox, please review the following notes.

Historical Versions & Shared-with-Me Documents

In DropBox, it is common for users to share documents with each other.
DropBox permissions allow the owner of a document to download all its versions, however, a collaborator can only download the latest version.

In DropBox, if you are looking at a document, you may see a screen that looks similar to this:


This indicates that the document may be owned by a different user and your account may be a collaborator.  To find out, right-click on the document and select Manage Permissions:

In the dialog that comes up, you will see something like the following:


In the example above, you will notice that the user account listed is not the owner.  Because of this, only the latest version of the document will be able to downloaded.

Depending on the settings you have selected, downloading historical versions may be attempted.  In the event that you are not the owner of a document, the latest version of a document will download successfully but historical versions will display the following error message:
