Restore to Folders: Best Practices

Restore to Folders: Best Practices

Sometimes firms want a copy of their documents in-hand.  This article summarizes the best way to do this.

  1. Create a VHDX virtual hard drive and attach it to your migration workstation.
  2. BitLocker-Encrypt the VHDX
    1. Save the password to the drive and email it to your client.
  3. Use Universal Migrator to restore the documents to this VHDX drive.
  4. Put a copy of the following data onto the VHDX drive:
    1. The raw __DOCS folder
    2. A copy of the BAK of the UM database
    3. A copy of your playbook
    4. A text file that says "This backup created by <Your Name> using Universal Migrator.".  Include your name, email address, and phone number.
    5. A copy of the Universal Migrator EXE file
  5. Detach the VHDX drive
  6. Copy the VHDX to an unencrypted USB drive (this is safe because the contents are still encrypted)
  7. Provide the client with two copies of the USB drive
